What do global mobility managers think of their mobility programs, their relocation management companies, and what’s going on in the global mobility world? At the recent Worldwide ERC Global Workforce Symposium, we wanted to find out what attendees had to say about such topics. With a whiteboard-clad booth and plenty of markers, Lexicon’s team heard what’s on the minds of global mobility decision makers.
By engaging attendees with relevant questions about their global mobility program, our “We Hear You” campaign provided a perfect platform for attendees to get their voice back into their relocation program – a principal Lexicon believes is integral for a successful client partnership. We’re sharing our findings here to give you some insight into what others in your position are thinking.
Four questions were posed to attendees:
- Describe your mobility program in one word.
- What is the biggest trend impacting employee relocations?
- How would you define a successful global mobility program?
- What are you looking for in a relocation management company?
Respondents wrote a wide range of answers on our boards, but a few themes emerged. Here are the answers broken down by question.
Question #1: Describe your mobility program in one word.
Flexible. Dynamic. Customized. Personalized.
Companies obviously want (and have!) programs that are tailored to meet the specific needs of their individual employees. A “one size fits all” program is not the answer. If employee A needs something different from employee B, a mobility program should be able to meet those needs. And when external factors change, your program should change along with them. A recent whitepaper published by Lexicon highlighted some perfect examples. Get out our complimentary “U.S. Domestic Core/Flex Relocation Program” white paper now.
Effective. Quality. Wonderful. vs. Complicated. Growing.
While some companies are satisfied and happy with their programs, others are still looking for guidance and help. If you consider your program too complicated, maybe it’s time to streamline or seek outside advice on what areas can be simplified. A growing program is a positive, but it can also be overwhelming. Does your program need a full overhaul to meet your needs, or do you just need to tweak a few areas for expansion? These are questions your relocation management company should help you answer. If you’re looking for fresh ideas and advice, our global mobility teams are always ready to help.
Question #2: What is the biggest trend impacting employee relocations?
The wide-ranging answers to this question highlighted just how many factors affect employee relocations today. Some of those we’re constantly aware of include:
- Cost control
These items are always top of mind for those involved with employee relocations. Politics and technology are ever changing, and they can have a major effect on both assignees and those administering a mobility program. Making sure your company is compliant should always be a priority, but there are so many rules and regulations worldwide that it can be tough to keep up with every single one. Finally, every company strives to stay on top of costs – the bottom line is never far from your mind.
Respondents also touched on the effect globalization has on their programs – for both management training and as a company-wide mindset. Further issues include family dynamics (including the need to pay attention to spousal support), home sale and inventory issues, and the passive job growth of today’s economy.
(Pssst…our recent report on global trends discusses many of these issues and just what they mean for global mobility! If you’re interested in a deeper look at these trends, check it out here!)
